When I say,
"Your life is not only yours to live, but yours to destroy."
it's not as a dire warning, or a remark on suicide.
Rather, I refer to your entitlement to do damage to your own well-being;
or, that you don't owe yourself to others.
You have the right to take risks that affect you.
So when you are afraid to speak your mind, because people might think ill of you, or to move a little closer because the object of your proposed intimacy might turn you down, it is up to you to weigh the risks and to choose. The denial or ill thought will be upon you.
So don't be afraid of rejection for its own sake, as if that would make you a bad team member. There is nothing inherently wrong or sinful or irresponsible about being denied. Think only of whether you are willing to chance its toll on yourself.
In such a space of acting for yourself, it is easier to be bold in matters of compassion, vulnerability and closeness.
