My mum was in town, and we took the opportunity to go over all sorts of things: her new house; my studies; family; hobbies; gender. On the latter item, I gave her the okay to tell anyone as she sees fit. Did I mention that my Mum lives in Kelowna? Kelowna: between the ridings of the Honorable Stockwell Day and Darrell Stinson, and per-capita church capital of Canada? It has to happen sooner or later.

Things are getting pretty cool now, and although I remain confused as to how y'all who rely on reading social subtlely get through the day without going paranoid (referring especially to many of you female people), after some consideration, I have decided that I'm pretty sure that the following is not just wishful thinking. There is, of course, no way to know for sure.

1. Can use women's washroom at SFU without incident as-of-yet.

2. At paint store, the clerk says "Oh Andrea, ***** has a question about metal primer"

"*****" indicates a quick double-check and a short pause where one would normally expect a gendered pronoun or honourific

3. I am standing by the rear doors on the Westbound #9. A punk/studenty/queerish-looking woman gets onto the bus. There are many places to stand, but she walks over to the back door and turns to face me with her back to the direction of the bus, leaving her a shitty view of where we're going, or outside, but a good view of me in my jacket and cap; a view of which she seems to be availing herself.

At a stop, a man behind me says "excuse me."
"I'm sorry - pardon me." I say in my default voice, then step aside to let him off.
Just after she hears me speak, the aforementioned woman turns around to face the front, her chest to a piece of transparent-ish plastic. She does not waver from this awkward stance until she gets off.

4. Someone at work was checking me out. Won't say who. This is new, and very unexpected.

Just more evidence that we need a non-gendered person-specific pronoun anyways.

When doing my taxes online I learned that only in Quebec is one required to select a gender when filing. Pleasantly surprised was I.
