I have a flexible mind, and can come up with creative solutions and concrete ideas to improve your university experience. When it comes to advocating student interests, I am able to do so in a polite, communicative and effective manner: I don't chant slogans, but find consensus.
While I will vote for lower tuition, I also support other methods of reducing the strain on your wallet. For example, I propose that the university monitor the cost of textbooks, and should use our library's online journal subscriptions to provide alternatives to overpriced custom courseware.
I will work to get you full value for your education. How many times have you sat in class, just to hear the basics of library use, citing and plagiarism for the umpteenth time? How many times has your class ended alarmingly early after you've cut short your sleep and/or taken the bus to be there? I believe that these are both forms of waste and, as such, a disservice to students, and a dishonour to the contributions of taxpayers and donors.
I propose that the university should implement a series of one-hour "everything you need to know about research" seminars, and provide them to all students, much like the library-use classes in place now, thus saving the time of both profs and students. I also propose that profs be encouraged to have material ready for the full length of classes - they might give students the option to leave early, but they should at least have review prepared for those who wish to get full value for their time, tuition and commute.
What else? I want labs and tutorials at times close to lectures. I want more common space. I want to take gender off of all single-occupant washrooms, and as many university forms as possible (it's not just progressive - data entry costs money, and one-gender washrooms create unnecessary lineups). I want to see that our satellite campuses offer a real university experience, and aren't just the wing of a shopping mall. I want your vote.
