Look at Garfield over the years, I notice two trends:
1. A shifting art style taht grows more static over time
2. A decrease in the number of characters. The most recent volume includes Garfield, Odie, Jon and a couple spiders. The most recent to be purged was Nermal. But there used to be Liz the vet, the mailman, Jon's brother, aunt and the rest of his family, garfield had a sort of girlfriend at one point, etcetera....
This winnowing occurs in jolts, but at decreasing rate over time, sort of like a collapsing ecosystem under climactic change: first the large predators go, then the large herbivores.... it takes awhile to get around to the insects.
From careful analysis, I have mathmatically derived that Odie will go in 2014, with Jon following in 2030. The spiders will vanish in 2056 leaving us with Garfield's internal monologues with static POV and less and less movement between panels until total stasis in 2073. In 2112, Garfield will go too, leaving only the table to entertain us for the next three hundred and forty eight years until it vanishes, leaving blank panels until artistic heat-death at some point after the year 3200.
