It occurs to me that social subtlety is a lot like stairs. Both can be elegant and speak of rich histories or at least familiarity. On the other hand, they are inacessible to some of the populace all of the time and more of the populace some of the time, while being an inconvenience in some crippled or impaired states and a cause of accidents. Both are also fun, but a little rough, to slide down.
