(no subject)

Thanksgiving/Angstgiving dinner with the labeled/unlabled crowd. Fun. Large amounts of ethical food. Yams. Wine. More yams. Glad I went. Glad I made tom yim stew.

A little awkward too, partially due to the whole "going to parties with a lot of people I've not met" thing, as I feel on the older end of the bell curve and think I remember being the young one at these things. This comes with turning twenty-six I'm told. That and being in a space where I'm challenging myself to be out. Now that's awkward. If I'm gonna do this transgender thing, I think that an androgynous name would be an asset. "Amy" causes too much cognitive dissonance as is, and I can't introduce myself as such in all spaces.

I'd thought it appropriate for one to take a new name at some point in one's early adulthood, and had been considering doing so anyway. I found that this site helps.

Cassidy; Darwin; Fox; Garren; Greer; Lichen; October; Providence; Sasha; Unity.

I can't see you as Cassidy.

Lichen is a cool organism, but I'm not sure as a 'name'.

Garren and Greer sound more masculine to me than the others.

Fox is rather cool.

I dunno if I can call you Unity unless I'm allowed to make countless bad 1984 jokes.

We should do a late b-day dinner?

I like Sasha.

Victory through Unity; Unity through androgyny?

Birthday! Right. See most recent post.

[identity profile] estrellada.livejournal.com 2006-10-09 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Androgyny is the new black.

Right! I might get together with you at an alternate time, cuz of stuff. (see reply to post) Do you appreciate presents?

I already know a Cassidy. She's my niece.

Again, I still like Sasha.

What other time would be good for you?
I love presents, as long as they're either information-based, consumable, donatable or easy-to-move. Breklor's photo montage tickled me.

I agree. Sasha's a good name.

[identity profile] hundun.livejournal.com 2006-10-10 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
In my usual habit of hunting down and brooding over potential flaws, I'm trying to infer if Sasha would get me lots of questions about my "Slavic ancestry." (Soviet Scotland?). Then again, my Mom liked the name "Sasha."

The meaning, "one who defends or helps mankind," is appropriate.

Sasha Fox?
Sasha McNair? (My Mom's side of the family is named McNair, an they are my extended kin network)

Not bad.

I don't think people dwell too much over the national origins of names in our part of the world. And in particular when the people of that culture are of similar skin-tone to the nameholder's own origins. There are too many expatriot Chinese who have named themselves with antiquated British names to be shocked by a Scottish-Canadian Sasha.

I've liked that name for a long time, and I think you would do well by it were you to choose it.

Some of these are good - others not-so-good

Ashling (dream/vision)
Brooke (brook)
Carbon
Green
Grey
Loki
Loring (famous in war)
Marek (warlike)
Munin (memory)
Rhys (stream)
Salus (goddess of health)
Sheridan (wild)
Stacy (resurrection)
Zasha (people's defender)

Thank you for your thoughtful consideration. I like Sasha as well; it fits.

[identity profile] hundun.livejournal.com 2006-10-11 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that one's winning out by a long mile.

Thanks for your input.

Thank you. Who's Sonja?

Looking back on my journal from the future, I can say that I get asked about three times a month about what "Sasha" implies about my ancestry.

[identity profile] medousa.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Fascinating.
