Books are sometimes the same way. Look at
Robert Jordan's collection of doorstoppers
, each one getting longer and longer and telling less and less actual story.
Compare that with The Lord of the Rings or even
L.E Modesitt's Recluce
series that actually tell a story within each book rather than endless exposition, yattering and fluff.
