Scotchguard does wonders of preservation.

The trick is to use pre-shrunk fabric of durable weight (generally wool or felts work best, although you may have to purchase 1/3 more fabric than called for due to shrinkage - and if yer smart, you pre-shrink 2 or 3 times with wool before garment construction
